Cross Cutting Issues

Gender and Development

Gender equality is essential for empowering both women and men and addressing social injustice, promoting economic growth and eradicating poverty. The formulation and mainstreaming of effective and appropriate gender and development strategies into programmes is thus an essential ingredient of poverty reduction

Eastern and Southern Africa is at the epicentre of the AIDS pandemic. The link between HIV/AIDS, poverty and food insecurity is a vicious circle. HIV/AIDS is therefore a structural problem that Acacia is very much aware of and advocates for it to be mainstreamed into relief and development programmes.

Sustainable development can be defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In recognition of this, the Acacia policy is to promote environmentally sound economic and social development.

Violent conflict disrupts lives and livelihoods, destroys societies and economies, reduces people's access to basic services and can often lead to mass displacement of populations. A reduction in all aspects of conflict is a pre-requisite for long-term sustainable development.
